Residents of Greenwood, Indiana work hard to make their town synonymous with community. Throughout the year, the Greenwood Parks and Recreation Department sponsors FREE Greenwood events that bring the Greenwood community together. Ranging from the Valentine’s Day Dance to the Greenwood Freedom Festival and even a breakfast with Santa Claus, these free Greenwood events are perfect for entertaining Greenwood kids on a budget and spending quality time with the family without spending too much dough.
The Greenwood Park and Recreation Department aims to improve the quality of life throughout the entire community. Offering free family fun helps families come together, creates more of a sense of community and makes for safer streets. Because this cause is so worthy, many Greenwood business sponsor the annual free Greenwood events as a way to promote their business and give back to the community.

| National City Bank Valentine’s Dance This free Greenwood Event is hosted at the Greenwood Community Center. For more than a decade the city of Greenwood has sponsored a Valentine’s Dance for parents and children. Dress up for this special evening that features dancing, refreshments, crafts and a free picture for you and your date. | |
| East Egg Hunt This free Greenwood event is hosted at Craig Park in the Main Shelter. Bring your Greenwood kids ages two through ten with Easter baskets in tow. Collect fun-filled plastic eggs and meet the Easter Bunny as he hopes through the park. | |
| Arbor Day Tree Giveaway The Greenwood Parks and Recreation Department is always looking to make their sphere of the world a little greener. They encourage Greenwood residents to stop by the Greenwood Community Center on Arbor Day to collect a FREE tree seedling to plant in their own yard. Beautifying all of Greenwood is the mission of the Greenwood Parks and Recreation Department. | |
| Brookhaven at County Line Community Garage Sale In Greenwood, people under stand the value of the phrase, “Waste not, want not.” That is why the Greenwood community hosts a Community Garage Sale each year at Old City Park. Your trash is another man’s treasure. Be responsible to mother earth as you make a profit by selling your old stuff. Plus who knows what treasures await you at the other booths. Booth space is only $5.00 for residents and $10.00 for non-residents. | |
| Gregory and Appel Insurance Picnic in the Park Hosted at the Greenwood Amphitheater in Surina Square Park this picnic generally happens in the beginning of June. Kick of the start of summer with some summer fun. Children and adults of all ages are invited to enjoy music, food and fun all night. | |
| Little Caesars Pizza Halloween Costume Party Looking for some spooky Halloween plans in a family friendly atmosphere? Each year the Greenwood Community Center hosts a fun-filled Halloween party, complete with a costume contest, hayrides, pumpkin painting, a kids’ carnival and a cookout. | |
| Archer’s Meat and Catering Basketball Turkey Shoot This free Greenwood event is hosted at the Greenwood Community Center. This year make your Thanksgiving Turkey a prize trophy. Moms and dads are invited to team up with their tots for a change to win a Thanksgiving turkey in a basketball shooting contest. Each team should consist of one child and one adult in one of three different age groups. | |
| Bloomfield State Bank Breakfast with Santa For only $3.00 Greenwood residents can eat the most important meal of the day with the jolly old man in red. That is right Santa Claus is coming to town just to eat breakfast with your and your child. The delicious spread includes all of Santa’s favorites: pancakes, sausage, eggs, fruit, juice, milk and coffee. Take a photo with Santa or get a professional photo to capture your Greenwood kid’s youth (only $5.00). Space is limited, so reserve your spot in advance. Non-residents of Greenwood will be charged $5.00 per person. |
The Greenwood Freedom Festival
Last but certainly not least on the list of Greenwood events is the spectacular annual Greenwood Freedom Festival. This exciting event spans an entire weekend in the summer, and offers Greenwood people free activities, entertainment, food and of course fun for all ages. Celebrate national pride with your Greenwood neighbors as you help to foster a sense of civic involvement and community celebration.
Every year, this FREE Greenwood event draws more than forty thousand people to Greenwood from the community, Indianapolis‘ South side and across central Indiana. The festival has everything from a parade to food and business vendors, live entertainment, concerts, Kids’ Fairs, fireworks, and Old Towne Merchants Association Street Fair and much more!
Greenwood people work hard to bring this Indianapolis festival to fruition. Volunteers donate time throughout the whole year to organize the Greenwood Freedom Festival. The Greenwood Freedom Festival is made possible only through the generous support of sponsorship dollars and volunteers. Community is important to Greenwood people. This festival and other free Greenwood events help them to share in a spirit of community that builds a stronger town. Living in Greenwood is like adding to your family.
