Day Trips South of Greenwood

Bloomington, Indiana

Bloomington, Indiana is located less than ninety minutes south of Greenwood. This fun Indiana town is home to one of Indiana’s largest universities: Indiana University. The Hoosiers at this Indiana school are known for their sense of adventure. Take in a football or basketball game and watch future stars of Indianapolis sports in action. Or check out the Midwestern oasis of arts and entertainment. With plenty of great art galleries, museums, live music and performances, Bloomington is a cultural destination in Indiana.

Visit the Sage Collection of more than 19,000 objects of women’s, men’s, and children’s fashion, accessories, publications and fashion plates. Just one of the many cool art exhibits in Bloomington. Or take in an original show by the Bloomington Playwrights Project. After 29 years of creating innovative theatre experiences in Bloomington and in Indianapolis at the IndyFringe Theatre Festival, these playwrights are taking risks that pay off!

Or head to Bloomington in February for their annual Chocolate Festival. This Indiana festival is a fundraiser for Options for Better Living, a Bloomington organization that benefits people with disabilities. Day Trips for the Nature Lover

Brown County State Park

Brown County State Park is a beloved Indiana landmark. Located off of Highway 46, the drive from Greenwood to Brown County State Park clocks in at about one hour. But the drive is half the experience, as you take in the Indiana country side. Famous for its beautiful rolling hills, Brown County State Park offers large camp grounds, hiking trails, mountain bike trails, interpretive services, extensive horse riding facilities, other outdoor activities and beautiful look out points.

Morgan Monroe State Forest

The Morgan Monroe State Forest is also only an hour away from Greenwood, Indiana. This Forest preserve contains more than 24,000 acres in Morgan and Monroe counties in south central Indiana. The forest is characterized by steep ridges, valleys and some of the states finest hardwoods. The rocky soil was found to be unsuitable by the original settlers of the area, who attempted to clear the ridges for farm land. This Forest preserve was created in 1929 and is a representation of Indiana’s beauty.

TC Steele State Memorial

The T.C. Steele State Historic Site is the preserved home and studio of famed Indiana artists Theodore Clement Steele (1847-1926). This member of the noted “Hoosier Group” captured the beauty and splendor of Brown County in the American Impressionist movement. He was attracted to the area after a day trip of his own hiking through the hills, and decided to settle in the area in 1907 to continue being inspired by the beauty of Indiana’s nature. The site consists of 211 acres of wooded hills and ravines recognizable from some of Steele’s most famous works. His home on the grounds is now a historic museum. A perfect combination of art and nature for artistic outdoor enthusiasts.

Yellowwood State Forest

The Yellowwood State Forest is also located in the rolling hills of Brown County, Indiana. This day trip from Greenwood consists of 23,200 acres of scenic pristine lakes, hiking and horse trails, abundant wildlife, and overnight camp grounds with easy access to the public.
